JACK MITCHELL, GRAHAM BRADDICK, TONY KENNEDY and ADDIEVILLE EAST FARM invite you to Devon for some of the world’s greatest wingshooting.  Because of its dramatic topography Devon is widely recognized as the home of the finest shoots in England, indeed the world over.  For our 14th consecutive year, we are proud of our associations with the private estates offering many of the highest, fastest and skillfully driven pheasants in England.  These traditional Devon estates are located in England’s most pastoral and unspoiled countryside. As we have entered a new millennium, moving at warp speed, it is a wonderful pleasure to step back to a time in our sporting history that has changed little over 100 years.   The ageless countryside pursuit of driven pheasants has maintained an unsurpassed reputation as the ultimate shooting adventure.   Beyond the shooting, is the history, romance, spectacular scenery, overwhelming hospitality, friendships and sheer fun we have.

The following is a schedule of most of this year’s trip:

Sunday, December 3rd….                 Arrive Devon and settle in at the Northcote Manor nestled outside the village of Umberleigh.  As                                                              Devon is renowned for its quality of shooting, the historic Northcote Manor is equally renowned for its                                                              quality of cuisine and accommodations. From the moment youarrive there, you experience the                                                              atmosphere of a cherished 18th century country house, surrounded by gardens and once owned by King                                                              Henry VIII.  Each of the eleven bedroom suites has been individually designed and furnished to the                                                              highest standards to ensure a truly luxurious atmosphere. Northcote Manor is ours exclusively and                                                              nearby all but one of the estates we will be shooting.  Further information on our home in Devon can be                                                              seen on their Website-www.northcotemanor.co.uk

Our good friends, Graham Braddick, his son Robert , Tony Kennedy, and of course, Jack Mitchell will                                                              host us during the week.   Most of Jack’s life has been deeply involved in driven pheasant shooting and                                                              he can answer all your questions on the history, nuances and customs of all aspects of our trip.  In the                                                              five (5) days of shooting, approximately 12,500 pheasants will be driven over the shooters.  Most                                                              people find the excitement of driven pheasants to cause sudden flaws in their shooting technique.  Jack,                                                              one of England’s most renowned coaches, will be with you to instruct on live birds every day.

Monday, December 4th                   Driven pheasants at GREAT WARHAM - Yeory and Mount Pleasant Beat - Now Graham Braddick’s                                                            estate, it dates back at least to Lady Havisia de Redvers in 1490. Great Warham occupies a truly                                                             delightful position in an ox bow of the River Torridge, in the  unspoiled, lush and well wooded                                                             Torridge river valley. The estate is well situated within the very steep sided valley to present high                                                             pheasants in a very sporting manner.  On this day, as well as the rest of the week, the principal quarry is                                                             pheasant with a mixed bag of woodcock, wood pigeons, partridge and snipe possible on each day.  Our                                                             host Graham and Robert Braddick will keep us laughing despite our errant shots.                                                             250 bird expected bag

Tuesday, December 5th               Driven Pheasants at CLOVELLY - Clovelly is on the North Devon Coast, a picturesque and quaint                                                         village with cobbled  streets leading to the beach. The Estate comprises the village and surrounding land                                                           and is owned by the Rous family.  They are descendants of  Lord Asquith-Prime Minister from 1908 to                                                          1916 and related to Admiral Rous, famous for his racehorse handicapping system and founder of the                                                          Jockey Club of Great Britain.  It is a shoot of very long wooded valleys on both sides, rising in some                                                          places to 400 feet above the guns.  They say some pheasants may go over the guns out of shot. One drive                                                          is down to a cove called Mouth Mill, which very few people have had the pleasure of seeing.  One of the                                                          guns on this drive is occasionally on the beach.  This shoot provides fantastic scenery of wooded valleys,                                                          twisted oak trees and beautiful sea views, and I would advise guns to bring along their cameras. Our host,                                                          Edward Griggs is a true Devon countryman who has mastered the art of presenting pheasants. 250 bird                                                          expected bag

Wednesday, December 6th        Driven pheasants at LORD CLINTON’S ESTATE - The Clinton Barony is almost the oldest in                                                         England. It has a distinguished and complex history dating back to Geoffrey de Clinton, Lord Chamberlain                                                        and Treasurer to Henry 1 (1100-1135). Our hosts, Lord and Lady Clinton, are delightful.  250 bird                                                         expected bag

Thursday, December 7th             Driven pheasants at PENTILLIE - Pentillie is a private family shoot owned by the Coryton family and is                                                         on the river Tamar. It’s woods were laid out for shooting over a hundred years ago. Our good mate and                                                         host at Pentillie is Tony Kennedy, one of the most knowledgeable men in the world concerning fine guns                                                         and driven shooting and equally important, a man with a truly witty sense of British humor.  250 bird                                                         expected bag

Friday, December 8th                 Driven pheasants at  GREAT WARHAM -  Great Warham Beat - Each year we have seen this beat                                                         improve to become one of our most enjoyable days.  250bird expected bag

Saturday, December 9th             Depart DEVON- (This schedule allows you to be home better than two weeks prior to Christmas).

Included in the trip is your membership in the “British Association for Shooting and Conservation” to help support wildlife conservation and the shooting sports in England and for added insurance reasons.

The price for the trip covers everything including shells, licenses, taxes, transportation while in Devon and meals.  You are responsible for transportation to and from Devon, drinks and personal items while at the Northcote Manor, and tips for the drivers and Gamekeepers. The Gamekeeper’s tip is traditionally 10 pounds per 100 birds bagged and presented after each day’s shooting.

The trip for a single gun is 6000 pounds sterling based on nine (9) guns.  The cost for a couple with one gun shooting, which they may share, is 6490 pounds sterling.  The cost for a couple with both shooting is 11,500 pounds sterling.  The above figures are all based on nine (9) guns.  If we shoot eight (8) guns, the trip for a single gun would be 6640 pounds sterling.  The cost for a couple with one gun shooting, which they may share is 7140 pounds sterling.  The cost for a couple with both shooting is 12,770 pounds sterling.

A typical day in Devon will start with a hearty breakfast at around 8 o’clock, allowing plenty of time to be at the estates by 9:30 a.m.  There will be four or five drives in the morning followed by a superb lunch which will invariably end with a glass of port.  In the afternoon, there will be more drives and shooting will be finished by 4 o’clock to allow the pheasants time to go to roost before dark.  Tea and drink, intermingled with a lot of talk about the “high one” which you hit, or I missed, follows the shoot.  This usually takes until about 6 o’clock when we disperse for baths.  Dinner is usually at about 8 o’clock.

Devon in the Southwest part of England is near the ocean and its weather is influenced by the Gulf Stream.  It should be cool and windy with a light frost in the mornings warming up to the 50’s by noon.  Shooters will be most comfortable in wellies, a warm sweater and waxed cotton or Gortex jackets. Normally the men will wear a tie and jacket for dinner.

Should you decide to bring a companion and they decide not to accompany you shooting each day, Devon has much to offer.  The sea is always close by with picturesque fishing villages like Ilfracombe or visiting Lynton with its water-operated cliff railway, shopping in Plymouth or touring Exeter Cathedral.

The camaraderie of the shooting party and hospitality of the Brits are a large part of the overall enjoyment of this trip.  We think we have put together a great bunch of people on both sides of the Atlantic.
